Ulla West
utilizes photography, film, textile and other media to create works that deal with identity and its connection to our personal and public environments. It is not uncommon for her sculptures and installations to be combinations of new and old technologies, blending digital media with physical ones. In this work, techniques of arts and crafts, such as needlework and crocheting, are just as important as photography, digital media, film editing, animation, and programming.
Usually, the projects starts as an investigation or documentation, with the purpose to relate to and handle a specific situation or phenomenon. The work itself leads to different and unexpected questions, materials, ideas, collaborations, and can be going on for years. Ulla West’s work literally evolves out of her previous pieces.
UllaWest addresses the violation of personal or intimate space in her pieces, as in the work with the Robot, O#X, that follows the viewer (occasionally with a video camera), thus making the viewer an unwilling participant in the work itself.
